The Chief Constable of Carmarthenshire Mr William Philipps

Mr William Philipps, Chief Constable of Carmarthenshire, was born in that county in June, 1832, and was the third son of Gasmond Philipps, Esq., of Cwmgwelly, J.P. and D.L. for the County of Carmarthen.

Mr Philipps joined the Carmarthenshire Constabulary in March, 1856, as Superintendent, and took charge of the Carmarthen Division. Upon the resignation of Mr Superintendent Wood, late of the 61st Regiment, in November of the same year, he was transferred to the Llandilo Division, where he remained until 1875, when he was unanimously appointed Chief Constable, in succession to Colonel Scott, who had been sent to Carmarthenshire to organise a Police Force during the Rebecca Riots in 1843, and who there served as Chief Constalle until his death.

Mr William Philipps was the Chief Constable of Carmarthensire from 1875 to 1908. He died in office and was succeeded by his son.
