Heavy Goods Vehicles

BY ALAN MATTHEWS

We all know that the service uses heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) for mobile control centres, lock-ups, USUs and many others, but one recent use has come about as a result of modern technology.

With the ease of ownership of mobile phones, lap-tops, tablets and heaven knows what else, it was clearly only a matter of time before HGV drivers started to use these items while on the move. The thing was though, that if you were sat in the passenger seat of a traffic car, you couldn't see what the lorry driver was doing unless he had a phone glued to his ear and in the case of LHD foreign vehicles that was impossible anyway.

This shortcoming must have got someone in the job thinking (probably Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) of a way to counteract this problem and catch them at it. Below is a photograph of an HGV leased by the police with the one aim of seeing into the cabs of HGVs and check what the drivers are up to.
