Sergeant William Bailey
Mr William Bailey was a Sergeant in the Winchester City Police. Every available member of the Winchester City Police attended his funeral in May 1893: Superintendent Felton, Sergeants Jelliff and Day and Constables Burner, Wheeler, Eames and Mansbridge.
Constable John Underwood
Constable John Underwood served with the Winchester City Police for 38 years and five months, having joined in 1853 and retiring 1 December 1891. Mr Underwood was held in such redeem and regard that they recommended for him the largest superannuation ever conferred on a City Police Constable, two-thirds of his pay, 17s. 4d. per week.
Constable Douglas Beavis
Mr Douglas Beavis, of Ventnor, Isle of Wight, entered the Winchester City Police force in 1899, and served 28 years. After his retirement he was appointed Bedesman at the Winchester Cathedral. He gave a cup for Elementary Schools Football, was a life saving instructor and a jury bailiff at the Assize and Quarter Sessions Court.
