York and North East Yorkshire Police
1968 - 1974
There was a huge amount of national politics around the formation of the York and North-East Yorkshire Police force. The original plans were for a 1967 amalgamation of York City Police, Hull City Police and the East Riding Constabulary. Middlesbrough Borough Police would amalgamate with the North Riding Constabulary.
The City of Hull objected vehemently to being amalgamated, with a political lobbying operation at Westminster. This was because they saw they would lose power, as York was a richer and more dominant city. Hull had three very powerful MP's and they swayed the Home Secretary, so the amalgamation order for 1967 was cancelled and instead, York City Police, the East Riding Constabulary and the North Riding Constabulary amalgamated on 1st July 1968. Middlesbrough Borough Police took in parts of Durham to become Teesside Constabulary.
